Chantal Powell’s wonderland
Arriving at the gallery, I met the artist close to a cage sheltering a flower explosion - seemed to come straight of Murakami’s world. A spring-inspired top hat firmly sat on her head, one hand was tracing an elegant baller in the air to underline her enthusiasm, another was balancing a vintage cup of tea. Behind her, the table was set for an Easter party – elegant mismatched cups, jam tartlets, chocolate eggs and bunnies…
And what other creator could take you along for a quizz and a card castle competition? (do note the different techiniques! Anyway, a lady won…)
The scene really gives you a glimpse of Chantal Powell’s universe. Inspired by Alice in wonderland, she focuses on the magic of it. You can see each day as a boring routine… or see fascinating stories behing each detail. Just keep a children’s mind. Her life is not so much a box of chocolate as a treasure box:
Her analysis goes a step further. Lewis Caroll’s story tells of dreams – incorporating then transforming events of the day. In other words - a personal journey to better go through life. And so her art also investigates reflections, transparences, sepia colours… A wave of mixed comfort and nostalgy:

Each of her creations means to create an emotion, wake up a forgotten memory – maybe a bright childhood joy, a slice of life, a smile form a loved one, a face.
Why not enjoy a spring walk through Notting Hill to discover her work?
