West Dulwich
It is ever so easy to go to – just jump on a train at London Victoria. You will get a brilliant view of Battersea power station on the way and will arrive in 11-12mn. Call it a staycation!
The platform is elevated – it feels as if you are in the trees somehow. Down the slope is the tiniest shop you could think of, New Leaf, where you can buy second hand books and bird houses that fund the garden along the station. Great initiative.
Turn right, keep walking a while: you are now in the village part of West Dulwich. How quiet! I love to pause at the Picture Gallery to admire their classic collection. St this time of the year, children will find plenty of chestnuts – ideal if they want to make conkers. Everything around seems timeless, houses are adorable. There is a community feeling too - people know and greet each other. A few chain names have appeared, sure, but independant shops still win. Locals stop for coffee and a cake at Romeo Jones,, a handerkerchief-size deli with a few tables outside. Others choose picnic food at Shepherd’s food before strolling through Dulwich Park.
A little slice of countryside, such a peaceful haven – come and enjoy with a book or your hand in your pockets, alone, lost in your thoughts, as a romantic walk with a lover, surrounded by kids giggles but always with a smile.
