Brut

Elvis is said to have been wearing it. Obama, as astudent, was a fan. Irresistible iconic touch, a fragrance that marked many generations. A retro chic side in an emerald casing. Refreshing and spiced. Elegant but powerful. Makes you think of the warm autumn sun, Makes you want to cuddle close to your man’s neck, breathing it in. Brut.

The new campaign focuses on those short but almost scary moments in life. Those you should be able to reason yet remain petrified for a few minutes. Being at the dentist. Getting ready to kick that last ball for a penalty, watched by hundreds or thousands or even friends and colleagues. Pretending to be brave and accept to hold a tarentula in your hands, no matter how harmless it is supposed to be. And in those brief yet very long seconds, you can only focus on yourself. And suddenly, the conforting Brut perfume gives you a little of your strength back.

How about you? Love it? What does it evoque?

Babel

More than a theater play, Babel is… a life experience, another way to conceive a show. The story – although rich, funny and moving – is almost secondary. It all begins at the entrance of a park, for yes, it all takes place outdoors. The guests step in, welcomed in a variety of languages. On each side of the path, you can glimpses little scenes through the branches, frozen minutes into someone’s world, a movement reproduced a thousand time. Here, someone is ironing in the tree, another preparing vegetables on a bench, someone is reading a book aloud, another dining alone, looking worried… 50 or so raise your curiosity. Here and there, other characters wearing white, modern angels, smile at you, explaining mysteriously “Look hard”, “See more”, “The day has come”…

Suddenly, the way opens onto a meadow. In the background, a bells tower rising high, futuristic looking tents. Impossible to guess what will happen tonight. No specific stage, no seat. You are free to wander around, talk to the actors, discover everything. You will learn to knit, make a little piece of a plasticine city, have a drink, listen to the most beautiful talk on languages, a choir, a concert. It has a village fête feeling to it, a cheerfulness.

And then the story starts, actions happen all around you, sometimes a few steps away. Froms spectator, you switch to belonging to it all, you are in the very heart of it, the actors (300) do not only speak to each other, they include you, the crowd, their crowd. No moment is static. See here on the stage and oh, wait on the towers, and there projected on the stone wall. It is a show not to be watched but to be lived, making you want to do something for the universe you are immersed in. Spectacular indeed, unforgettable. What is it about? Peopl on their own and groups, the strength of community and the bravery of individuals, communications beyond language, freedom and so much more. You just have to be there and see this.

Carnaby Street book exchange

A litterary oasis in the fashion heart of London. The Carnaby Street book exchange  offers a simple room, armchairs, vintage details here and there, shelves covered in novels, some new, some from another generation, most having had a few lives already but still having a few more to offer. Just bring a book, look around for one which will make you smile, the exchange is free. The effect is immediate – very few visitors leave immediately, most leaf through a few pages, then blindly try and find a seat, not taking their eyes from the story and plunge into another world straight away…

Charley Harper dishes

Charley Harper‘s stroke of pencil reflects a world in geometrical shapes. As if each sketch had an architecture of its own. Its sublime drawings of fish have now been declined by Fish Eddy on very graphic dishes and can be found at Liberty. It seems superfluous to even add anything to the plate, they seem to come alive on their own, maybe just place them on a table in Pacific Ocean colours…

Handmade in Britain

How to define Handmade in Britain? Multi-facetted. The idea is to discover amazing (and I do mean this) British artists, those that you should be really proud of and maybe leave not so far from you. To be marvelled by creativity, their skills, their savoir-faire, whether traditional or innovative.

You expect, somehow, kind of guide. The word will soon feel too cold, this book is so much more than that. The pictures will catch your gaze at once. The purety of the lines. The beauty of the curves. The sublimed grain of wood. The refinement of combined fabrics. The delicate touches of a jewel.

The first time, you will go too fast, getting drunk on the illustrations. In a world numbed by high street stores, it is easy to forget the individuality of a unique object. The way it can touch you, mean so much more to you because, behind it, there is a story, an artist, not just a succession of machines and labels.

Then you slow down, take more time to turn a page. Each title plunges you straight into the personnality of each designer, inviting you to read further, jump right into their world. Funny how you will enjoy it as you would a collection of short stories, each staying with your thoughts. And so it will join your favourite art books on your coffee table, because, after all, it is one of them.

Handmade in Britain

Mulberry – Autumn Winter collection 2012

Thinking about the cold season to come, Mulberry found inspiration in the American classic for children Where the wild things are. Supernatural creatures – with such a cuteness to them it feels to harsh to call them monsters – in their impeccably brushed fur, very stylish, hypnotising and cat like gaze. The idea? Make you reconnect with your inner explorer-self, always ready to go on an adventure (even an urban one, after all, the city is a kind of jungle, right?), with an  overflowing imagination. Add eskimo, native American Indian influences, complex textures, and you are ready to find the coldest temperature. Winter? Ah! Bring it on.

And so the Mulberry yeti is a stylish icon indeed. It can even pride itself to feature on quite a few pieces of the collection such as this flame sweater – coton and lace, comfort and glamour. It has a girlie/kawai side to it, an immediate sun effect to the foundation.

Lace, leather, furs, quilted fabrics reflect the vivid palette of autums, marryant dark with bright hues. The tye dye effect is indeed a success, very foxy, luxurious. we loved the reversible jacket (see third picture) – rainbow on the outsude, fur inside. Or the other way round, depending on your mood.

A lot of fur on the agenda in woodland tones -  think cinnamon, oak, dark bark, truffle. And look at this dress, made of braided rabbit fur. Don’t try to resist it. It just takes one carress and oh, you can imagine the feeling on your skin, and you-just-want-it-NOW. Sexiness inside out. Now, one of the trick in the range is to superpose – add a belt, one of the bright scarves and/or the extra-confy coat made of glossy goat fur.

Figure hugging skirts and dresses haven’t been forgotte, matching lace and supple leather, making each beautiful curve matter.

One of today’s trend definitely is to tassels and studs. And yes you can combine both is powerful heels. No way you can ignore those this season. They have something both playful and powerful to them.

The signature shoes, though, are the wedge booties with their elegant turn back ankle cuff, with or without fur. The line will fit every fashionista -  classical or flame colour, snake print, studded, suede… With those at your feet, the message is clear -  nothing will stop you.

Mulberry is, of course, all about bags. The Del Rey is on every fashionista’s wishlist but do wait for the limited editions -  they add to its Hollywood side. And so the range will show them in ostrich, croc, snakeskin, metallic effect with a jewelled lock, even more refined than the usual stamp, either with a turtle or snakeskin.

The Maisie is sure to get your attention too with its fascinating trompe-l’oeil – yes, definitely eye catching.A heat-moulded technology has been used to give the illusion of a classic Mulberry bag. Look at the top, nice contrast with the snake texture and beautiful metallic touches on the strap. And if you like to step outside of the way, just go for the petrol blue fur one…

One of my favourites is the Zig Zag bag for its Aztec inspiration. Yet it can go either gothic or ethnic and always in the smoothest leather for a fabulous graphic effect.

Always considered tweed to be boring? Think again – here it gets quite an exotic coral touch. The Lily also offers a clever handle in two lengths – a short one on one side to keep it firmly in hand, another at shoulder length for maximum flexibility. We all know how a day can go and freedom usuallay is the key to make it.

Another love at first sight -  the Alexa in flame, which will cheer up whichever winter day you have to fight your way through. A wonder at touch too, ever so velvety, calf fur, so, so refined.

Mulberry has its name printed in gold over the autumn-winter season to come. I challenge you to suceed to choose just one favourite item. Impossible, you just need a whole family of those…
