On sourit, on rit, on s’arrete, on reflechit, on admire, on applaudit.

Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery
Check out the walks through the city!

Of course, you’ll have to be prepared for the wait, expecially if you’re coming at the week-end…

We came back on another sunny Saturday. Well in advance: 09.00 when the museum wa sonly opening at 10.oo. The street was already 3/4 full. At 09.30, bothe sideways in the street behing were also crowded. We only stepped inside at 11.00…

Thankfully, the show is so very worth it. 70 works, some new, some revisited, some already seen. But how lucky to see them close!Of course, the beauty does not count, they are meant to stop you, make you smile laugh, think, bring an edge to your reality…

4 areas ahead:

Room 1: the very famous melted ice-cream van (though with still a touch of poetry with the flowers growing through)… and the revisited statues. You can spend half an hour savouring the details…

Room 2: Banksy’s workshop, with his stencils and details of his world as well as gallery of portraits…

Room 3: the weirdest. A fururistic zoo painting today’s consumerism and society. Our lethargy too. You will be strangely mesmerized by the CCTV nest, the nuggets feeding on grain, the hotdog in a cage drinking mustard… How not to smile in front of the white rabbit getting dressed to go out, make-up, jewels and all?

Last phase: the rest of the museum is very well done indeed. A lot of inteaction with little ones through computers, a fab Egyptian gallery, a stuffed animal room much better than the Horniman Museum’s… And even better, amidst serious paintings and collections, even more Banksy scattered here and there, framed in an old-fashion style. And you will sometines, watch a serious work of art wondering whether it could be a fake…? This has been thought of and Banksy’s will be indicated by a “local artist” sign. The best probably is the model city. So peaceful to watch. only if you work closely will you noticed it is filled with toy soldiers…

Verdict? 1-1.
Banksy is clearly adored by his fans. The exhibition is like entering his funfairland. Intoxicatingly funny.
The museum is pretty convincing too, I would love to go back and enjoy it more quietly. We spent 2 hours and a half inside, no wonder the queues get so large in the street!

Note to parents: Little ones will not understand the subtleties but most paintings are easy to explain. Do take them to see the dinosaurs on the first floor. you’ll find a good range of children book as well around that corner. The museum will offer a new exhibition from September 06th on, where children can create their own toy.

Psssst: Keep an eye open for the Hirst/Banksy teamwork!

Psssst (2): Why not have a milkshake on the other side of the street @ Rocatillos? Or go and cross the Clifton Suspension Bridge?

The symbol of Bristol.

Did you know a wine merchant actually started this idea in 1754? Vick Williams left £1000 in his will which were to be invested then used to build a bridge across the Avon Gorge.

30 years later however, the money still isn’t enough and probably will never be. It is decided to create a steel one instead to keep the prices down. There would be a toll to cross it to make up for any investment the government would have to add. A competition is launched and the famous Brunel wins it. The towers are influenced by the Egyptian style in fashion at the time. The architect also wanted sphinxes on top but this proved too expensive. The poor guy will die prematurely and will never see his project finished.

The structure remains impressive. Pedestrians and cyclist can cross it for free, cars still have to pay a symbolic 50p.

Try to imagine it at the time – gentlemen in costume, horse-driven carriages… wooden floor! Asphalt was only added in 1857. The word resisted well to the weather but…less to the regular horses discharge…

Look at the first tower, Leighton Woods, on the Clifton side. The structure below is hollow: two levels of galleries made of 12 chambers! This detail was only discovered in…2002. Those are linked by a narrow tunnel, one has to crawl through. It seems everything was sealed when the bridge was finished so no animal, no plant, not even a spider could be found inside. Just… 5m high stalactites…

Children love this bridge. A walkway on each side allows you to cross it safely and enjoy two different views: one side towards the sea, the other towards Bristol city docks. And oh, boy, one can see really far.

If you’re lucky, you might see a train on the railway on the right side of the gorge.

The visitor centre on the other side shows a small exhibition, an interactive miniature suspension bridge and a few games for the kids.

The Clifton village is only a few streets from the bridge – you’ll find plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops, worth the walk!

Gratuit! Free!
Banksy’s website

You’re a Banksy fan? Are planning to see this show no matter what?

So am I.

You know there’ll be some waiting, of cours, an hour, maybe an hour and a half.

Think again. I arrived at 11.00 on a Saturday and the museum had only been open for an hour. And the queue, well…

…started 3 streets from there. As for the waiting time? 3 hours 30!

The lucky ones, about to get in, had arrived at 09.30. I can only hope it gets better on a week day…

Although some people really made the most of this opportunity!

If you have to give up, don’t despair… you may still come accross some Banksy in the streets. Look for:

- the corner of High Kingsdown and St Michael’s Hill rd,

- Upper Maudlin St, on your right, just before getting to the Royal Hospital for Children,

- The Scotchman pub, at the corner of St Michael Hill and Horfield Rd. Step up Horfield rd and look whith the doors at the back.
