You already knew Daisy by Marc Jacobs, crowned with its now iconic flower. This, my friends, is the new déclinaison, Eau So Fresh. A spring fragrance par excellence, all senses. A bouquet of wild roses, just-picked raspberries, violets, grapefruit on a base of cedarwood and musk. It dances on your skin in elegant, light touches, just like a butterfly…
My hair refuses to be tamed. Each morning brings a fight. And anti-frizz serum. Another one to make it smooth. There is a lot of sighing.
A hairdresser recently whispered to me “Sometimes, it’s all about the brush…”. Point taken. To be fair, having a 8 year old in the house meant a huge collection of Hello Kitty ones. I’m not even sure where they all came from. I can only remember buying one. The one I’m mainly using. It’s bright pink, the first I see when I am still on autopilot in the morning. If you’re a mum, you know. Some details you happily forget when you haven’t had a coffee yet.
Time to go hunting for a high tech adult version. Luckily, Ecotools, my beloved make-up brushes brand, has just launched a new range. Yes, you guessed right – 5 beautiful hairbrushes, each with a different skill. You’re sure to find the perfect one!
Why fall for these? Because they’re light but offer a good grasp, thanks to their ergonomic bamboo handle. Because the brand is eco-conscious (renewable bamboo forest, recycled and recyclable paper for packaging…) and yes, this is compatible with beauty. But also because they are equipped with an aerodynamic Eco-Vent system that dries hair 20% faster. Really? Yes. I have tried it and on still damp hair, do not even need a hair dryer any more. It’s brilliant!
Which one to choose? Depends on what you need. In order of appearance on the pictures… Styler and Smoother if you love styling your hair. Sleek and Shine finisher, ideal for longer hair, distributing the natural moisturisers nicely. For a brushing, two sizes of round ones: Quick and full volume styler. The first is better for short to medium hair, the other for more volume in the curls. And the magic touch, Smoothing Detangler, will make your hair knot free without tears.
The bonus point? Ecotools has created a synthetic versions of boars’ hair. Cruelty free but wow, what a shine!
Actress. Author. Glamour Icon. Goddess. This woman has it all!
Joan Collins has just launched her first collection – Timeless Beauty. Because true Hollywood beauty is eternal, age defying. You could call it a lifestyle… It’s all about lining, framing a natural charm and giving that exceptional shine. I love, love her make up range, inspired by art deco design. One of those accessories you always have in your handbag: first because it fits you perfectly (some would call it a life saver), second because it catches everyone’s attention (and maybe a little jealousy too. Can’t hurt). Almost like wearing a beautiful jewel, it complements a lovely dress, perfect manicure. Look at this compact as dazzling as it is practical! Nice matte finish powder to light up your foundation, magnetic closure, a creamy rouge that hydrates deeply while brightening your smile… The names of the colours were chosen from the characters played by the stars. And yes, you can get the matching nail varnish.
Lots to discover. I have put on my wishlist, the divine rose lotion, Rose Optimise, rebalancing the skin pH. And the sumptuous night cream that erases tiredness. There also is a perfume, I am woman, quintessence of feminity, peach, bergamot, mandarin on a base of musk, tonka, vanilla… Just in case you want to put a spell on anyone on your way!
For a long time, I only wore Un jardin sur le Nil by Hermès. A sparkling fragrance reminding of green mango and lotus flowers, waterfalls, a slow boat ride, hand tracing a line in the chilled water. I rediscovered the brand recently with their Eau d’orange verte, more intense, taking you by surprise, sweet on a woman’s skin, spicier on a man’s.
And then, I saw this bottle. Discreet seduction. Catches your eyes, draws you nearer. Un jardin sur le toît, reference to the urban garden situated on the roof of Hermès’ headquarters in Paris, Rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Crystal curves, illuminated by this radiant green, the one seen on the first spring leaves, on in the French Venise Verte, between jade and celadon. Light but precise scent – pear, rose, basil, magniolia, cut grass, grapefruit. Ode to the seasons metamorphosis.
Have you noticed how tricky it is to find a good lip conditioner? Too creamy or even oily, too rich or not enough. When transparent they often make your lips paler. When glossy, it’s a little bit too much. Fruity, they make you lick again and again for the sugariness until it’s all gone. I have tried brand after brand, never totally convinced.
Caudalie seems to have found the perfect balance. A very light softness, a texture you will forget about but that really does the job, repairs beautifully, nourishes deeply, even if they’re at their driest. It discreetly makes your lips look slightly plumper too, innocently. The fragrance is very natural, an addictive hint of vanilla and I’d love to find a perfume that would hit that note as perfectly. The bonus point? 99.5% naturally-derived ingredients. On a very cold day, try it on your cheekbones too…
Golden letters, round and curled beautifully, Guerlain, like a secret code for elegance and beauty. Of all the luxurious brands, this one, to me, still has a soul. It means more than just fashion, it recreates the elegance of a past era where beauty was highlighted, not faked. The case reminds me of a pebble, polished by the waves, finding its place naturally in the warmth of your hand, monogrammed with transparent copper initials. It feels like opening a jewel box. Each time the same pleasure of discovering the meteorite effect, splashes of colours like an artist’s palette. Sun kissed petals. Guerlain describes these five hues as iridescent, a harmony. The fragrance is also a signature, poudre de riz enhanced with jasmine, bergamot, gardenia, ylang-ylang… Like holidays under the sun…
Dolce & Gabbana – the quintessence of dolce vita with excellence. Their fragrance Pour Elle has a timeless elegance, sensual, captivating. Let yourself be charmed by its clear notes of jasmine and neroli, sharpened by tangerine and orange blossom, finishing on a veil of sandalwood and vanilla. A crystalline scent that reveals itself at the slightest movement, at the base of the neck, on the wrist, like sweet words whispered to a lover.
A few months back, I got a small sample of this REN night cream. I was on automatic pilot when I opened it, reviewing mentally the to-do list for the following day. Rubbed a little between my fingers and its fragrance refocused me instantly. Was it? Yes, frankincense, the kind that evokes oriental far-away lands, Latin masses, The Thousand and One Nights, flying carpets, myrrh. Arabian, exotic, slightly smoky frankincense. I just had to go and buy it. At Liberty for that little extra touch of luxury.
Night creams are meant to have a richer texture, intense moisturising for a few hours sleep. Quite a comforting feeling but often slightly oily – I always wonder how much ends up being absorbed by my pillow. REN’s is quite seducing in its lightness – yes, your skin can breathe! It is hydrating of course, but its focus is more on smoothing fine lines, softening them. Ingredients include Calabrian oranges (for their vitamin C and Citroflavonoids, boosting the natural collagen of the skin), Frankincense and Boswellic Acid (to relax facial muscles), Camellia and Wheat Germ (to boost lipid content and restore). It’s more than just an enchanting fragrance, you see. Brilliant radiance guaranteed!
Garden memories, a whole collection of geraniums. Fire engine red, tender pink with a plum heart, apricot, pure white. As a child, I used to crush the petals on my nails, a natural dye for nail varnish when you are pretending to be a princess. But the perfume, you see, is not so much in the flower but in the leaf. Still today, I cannot walk past that plant without bruising a leaf and breathing in the fragrance. It simply strikes a chord with me, resonates almost. Floral, peppery, intense.
Aesop has succeeded to capture the essence perfectly, bottling it. A long note, a tonic that wakes you up, stays with you all day. They even added some mandarin and bergamot rind to make it zestier, tangy. To me, it’s pure vitamin C. I just have to open the bottle in the morning to feel alive again!
I am a real fan of beauty oils. Their rich, silky texture feels like pure luxury at the end of the day. I like them particularly as make-up removers, cleaning the skin gently, deeply yet respecting it. This one is another gem by Melvita and I have a couple of bottles in stock, that’s how much I use it! I recently incorporated avocados in healthy smoothies but hadn’t considered its beauty virtues: smoothing and anti-ageing, two words all women my age love to hear. Organic, as with all their products. Recommended for the eye contour – but I love it as a replacement of hand creams (especially after a gardening session) or any dry patch, elbows, shoulders, knees. It so easily absorbed and gives a plumpness back – I swear – instantly. The website even recommends it against stretch marks, says it all. Such a comfort-giving product. If I were to keep only one standby on my shelves, at the moment, this would be the one.
