10 reasons to plan an autumn break

That’s it. September. Say good-bye to fun times and holidays, wake us up round Christmas. Wait, what? But this season is gorgeous! And so much fun! Here are 10 reasons why you should book an autumn break right now.

1. Fight the “Work Blues”
In July and August, offices empty slowly. Fewer colleagues, fewer clients, fewer emails. It’s almost relaxing! September is quite a shock to the system and you suddenly fear you are drowning in an ocean of files. Book yourself a reward. There might not be any holiday allowance left before Christmas but how about city break? Paris and Vienna are particularly beautiful at this season…

2. The weather is still gorgeous
Pack light: the South of France, Italy, Spain, Greece will actually be quite warm still. And yes, you could come back on a Monday morning with a lovely tan!

3. It’s cheaper
It’s (sadly for us parents) the back to school effect. No crowd and bargain prices: what are you waiting for?

4. The colours are gorgeous
We’re talking gold, orange, yellow, copper, red against a bright blue sky… It’s the perfect excuse for a hike in the countryside or simply a walk in a city park to make the sea of leaves at your feet rustle and fly. Canada is particularly famous for its autumn palette but there is no need to go that far – Pitlochry in Scotland, Lombardy, Engadine in Switzerland are a real feast for the eyes.

5. Autumn is harvest time
How about a road trip to discover a wine region? Bordeaux, the Loire Valley, Champagne, take your pick the list is long. Even Montmartre, in Paris,  has its own vineyard and harvest festival… Then there is the cider route in Calvados. And that is only France! Add Budapest new wine and cheese festival, grape stomping in Spain and Portugal’s port wine route on your list too.

6. Oktoberfest
If you’re more of a beer lover, book your flight to Munich straight away. Oktoberfest is in full swing and will last another two weeks. With no less than 14 tents to visit, traditional costume and dishes, we’re pretty sure you will have the time of your life…

7. Book a culture trip
Museums too turn a new leaf with autumn. There are plenty of new exhibitions coming up this autumn: Magritte at the Centre Pompidou and the Nuit Blanche (a full night of art across the city) in Paris, an Ai WeiWei photo exhibition in Amsterdam, Hokusai, Hiroshige & Utamaro in Milan, Niki de St Phalle in Helsinki, Picasso and tribal art in Vienna, even a Triennale in Oslo.

8. Festivals all around
Cities with a twist! Try Berlin illuminated, a hot air balloon festival in Italy, a Halloween party in Tivoli, Denmark (the oldest amusement park in the world), flamenco in Seville

9. Let there be light
Shorter days, longer nights. Don’t despair! It’s time to go chasing the Northern Lights: Iceland and Tromsø in Norway are the best places to see them.

10. Start your Christmas shopping
Yes, my friend, I have used the C-word. The countdown has begun: there are less than 100 days left! Forget the UK high street – get them a gift with a story instead.
