London has this wonderful quality: it reinvents itself constantly. Take Tobacco Dock for example… Warehouse in the 18th century. Shop centre hoped to become the Covent Garden of the East End in the 90s. Filming location in the 2000s. A wonderful event space hosting festivals in the last few years. To this list can now be added Skylight, a fun(ky) summer rooftop with a brilliant view on the city.
You will first enter a world of concrete, Tobacco Dock’s former parking, take the stairs all the way to the last floor. Each step is painted a different colour, each flight offering a little rainbow and message of its own “This way up”, “You’re almost there”. You’re already smiling.
Await large terraces, comfy sofas and giant bean bags, a pétanque ground, a lawn to play croquet one, fairy lights galore. Add to this cocktail bars, finger licking good burgers by Flip Side, mouth-watering Greek dishes by Yiro. There will be screens both indoors and outdoors, to watch the Royal Wedding, Wimbledon, the Football World Cup, special events with DJs, the occasional yoga lessons.
Skylight definitely is a place to come to with friends and just chill out a whole afternoon. It’s at dusk though, that it is at its most magical. Standing there, a perfect watermelon mojito in hand, watching the sky turn gold then apricot, you simply fall in love again with London.
